Sometimes hand painting is nice to connect with your piece. Or is that just me? But sometimes, you want to bang things out quickly and it makes so much more sense to save lots of time by spraying. Take my customer’s set, for example. Long dresser, tall dresser, and two oversized nightstands. ALL WITH GROOVES in each drawer. Those are difficult to hand paint, and then to do another coat, and then 2 more coats of poly. Oh dear.

I’d say if I were to hand paint each coat (well, I did have to hand paint to prime them X2 coats so I know) would take me roughly 4 hours for the set per coat. This actually happened. Knowing that I’ll need to do 2 coats of paint after they’ve been primed (I don’t suggest throwing shellac-based primer in your sprayer, by the way), and then 2 coats of poly, that’s roughly 12-16 hours of hand painting to this set. Considering that spraying one coat on the whole set will take max 10 minutes per coat for all 4 pieces, so about 1 hour max of spray time for the paint AND poly, you know that this is something to look into.

I also want to mention the fact that the outcome eliminates the look of brushstrokes and gives an overall factory smooth look WHILE saving time! Now, I think about kitchen cabinets and taking them all off and bringing them all to the garage. This makes it all go so much faster than hand painting intricate grooves. There are so many pros to spraying vs hand painting!

A good spray comes with some challenges though. First off, you have to go beast mode and clean up your area (which I show you how to do in Lesson 1) and also protect all of your items from overspray. As well as investing time into preparing all of your drawers from overspray so that you get a clean and professional look. Another thing to think about is the overspray from your spray is in the air and there is no where else for it to fall but on the tops of your pieces, leaving a light gritty texture that you’ll want to smooth out. But these are just some very minor things about spraying that can be overcome and in my opinion, so worth it!
