What I REALLY want you to know about the upcoming lessons (actually, all lessons!) is that even though I’m showing you what I’m doing step by step, I want you to just use my teachings as a guide. I want you to play around and be an artiste. If you pick the same shades as me and do things exactly as I’m doing, that’s fine, but I always encourage you to use my teachings and make them your own. You may even add or detract a step that I do and that’s mighty fine by me. I want your creativity and intuition to shine! I want you to be proud of your painting!

PRO TIP

If you’re painting a mirror like I am, try using some jumbo Dollar Store playing cards cut up and fit them inside the frame of the mirror. Unfortunately in both lessons where I use mirrors, the frame against the glass was too tight. This will help to not have paint all over the glass like I end up doing. I feel like using painter’s tape around mirrors never really helps anyways, you still have to scrape paint off anyways. If you get paint on your mirror, see the tip later on for how to get it off.

Now what do you do if you don’t have a solid wood item, or you have an item with no visible faux wood grain like in the last lesson? As you can see, the mirror I did in the last lesson had some faux grain texture that we worked with easily. But for this type of project when starting from a smooth surface, we’re going to have to get creative…with layering!
